AVI

AVI is the original windows media format. As with OGM and Matroska, AVI is a wrapper format, mostly used in conjunction with MPEG-4 formats such as XVID and DIVX in recent days but in theory, it can be used with most audio and video compression schemes.

You do not need any special component to play AVI files (other than decoders for the compression scheme AVI files may contain). However, the Gabest Open Source AVI Splitter is more flexible than the standard AVI splitter that ships with windows as it can better handle incomplete or semi-corrupted files.
